Let's face it: Stock Chevrolet 305 heads do not perform very well on a race engine. When we modify 305 castings air flow on a stock head is improved from 165 cfm at .400″ lift to 195-200 to cfm with our "Undercover Porting". . This amounts to a 35 cfm improvement at .400" lift.
• Most unported heads approach 85 or 95 % of peak flow at .400? to .450? lift and do not need or want a maximum valve lift over .540? to.555?. Often a low cam lift with 1.65 or 1.7 ratio rockers is very helpful on the intake side as long as lift is kept to about .550?. Exhaust is less critical with 1.5 or 1.55 being the most popular.

So I'm in the middle of rebuilding a 350 for my car. I pulled the cam, and tried to run the casting numbers off of it with no luck. It's not a factory cam. I'd just leave it in there, however I am swapping to a set of vortec l31 062 heads which I cannot have more than a certain amount of lift (.480 I think, correct me if I'm wrong).

For instance, compare a pump-gas friendly flat top 327 Chevy with 9.7:1 compression with 4.000" bore and 64cc heads. now build that block with a 4.000" stroke (yes, it will fit. It's not easy, but it will fit!) and flat top pistons. It suddenly becomes a race-gas only 11.7:1 compression! This means dished pistons or bigger chamber volume heads.
